When we swapped the valleys for the city last June, one of our key ‘wants’ was to be able to walk to a coffee shop/deli/cafe/eatery that suited us. Suiting us means a) nearby b) a good vegetarian choice c) clean and d) friendly.
After a few false starts we finally bought a house that we love near Thompson’s Park. It was probably a little further out than our original search area, but houses were flying off the shelf at a ridiculous pace and we kept missing out and had one purchase fall through. I have to say I’m glad. Because now we live in a quiet, beautiful leafy street, next to my favourite park (for which we have a key :-)) and are able to park our car near our house. So all is well.
Walking to eateries has never been an issue with the delightful Arbennig just 10 minutes away, and then Kemis and a few others also within walking distance. All are worth the short trip and so we’ve been loving our Cardiff life.
A couple of months ago hubby sent me an excited text to say that there was a new vegetarian and vegan friendly cafe open almost on our doorstep. And so it has! The Bee and Honey is tucked away in middle of Clive Street. Blink and you’ll miss it, it’s tiny.
Owned and run by Jenny Beer, this place is such a delight. It offers fantastic bread from Riverside Sourdough, and a raft of deli products. They’ve also recently started to stock vegan ready meals and various vegan products have always been available to buy (I’m currently loving the vegan beef jerky).
The menu does cater for meat eaters, but is predominantly vegetarian or vegan based with lots of options for those who require gluten free too. You’ll find anything from breakfasts, light bites to salads and sandwiches and the usual tea and coffee options. One of my favourite dishes is the herbed feta and olive salad. It’s gorgeous and is a generous portion size. And the Millionaire’s shortbread has to be tasted to be believed. Thick dark chocolatey deliciousness smothering sweet caramel biscuityness. Oh my! There’s nothing standard or boring about The Bee and Honey’s menu.
Hubby and I love this place for its food, its coffee and its convenient location, but we also love it because it sits well with us ethically and importantly, it cares about its customers. The staff are super friendly not just to regulars, but to anyone that walks through the door. And the team are always looking to improve the offering. Just last week we were asked to sample some new vegan chocolate brownies that were being developed – can’t wait for those to be on sale!
My only concern for The Bee and Honey is the size of the cafe – it’s very small and so I worry that they may not be able to turn over the required number of covers in the long term. But it won’t be for the want of them, or me trying.
This cafe is utterly delightful as is the food and as are the staff.
